Choosing a Signature Scent When You Don’t Know Who You Are

Practicing Her

Have you ever tried to choose a signature scent… and realized you don’t actually know who you’re choosing it for?

That was me recently.

I kept thinking, “Okay. This is the year. Grown woman era. We’re picking a signature.”

And then I’d stand in front of a wall of perfume and feel oddly exposed.

Because a signature scent isn’t just “what smells good.”

It’s who you’re announcing yourself as.

And I wasn’t sure who that was anymore.

Sometimes finding your scent starts with exploring.

The In-Between Phase

I don’t hate who I used to be.

But I can feel the shift.

Some of my older perfumes were sweeter. Louder. A little chaotic in a charming way. They felt like late nights, impulsive decisions, and not caring too much.

Now when I spray them, they don’t feel wrong.

They just don’t feel current.

It’s like wearing a jacket that technically still fits — but doesn’t feel like your style anymore.

And I started wondering:

Am I trying to choose a scent for who I used to be? Or for some aspirational, hyper-disciplined version of myself that wakes up at 5am and journals?

Because if I’m honest?

I’m not her.

I’m the woman who wants to evolve. And also wants 8 more minutes.

The Pressure of Picking “The One”

There’s something oddly permanent-feeling about choosing a signature scent.

Like once you declare it, that’s it. That’s your personality now.

And that felt like too much commitment for someone who is still editing.

What if I pick something too serious? Too soft? Too safe? Too bold?

What if I pick wrong?

And then I realized — maybe that’s the wrong question.

Maybe the better question is:

What feels aligned right now?

Not aspirational. Not impressive. Not age-appropriate according to the internet.

Aligned.

Aligned right now is enough.

What I’m Learning

A signature scent doesn’t have to represent your final form.

It can represent the version of you you’re practicing.

The one who:

  • Keeps promises to herself.

  • Moves a little more intentionally.

  • Doesn’t rush her own evolution.

  • Cares — but not in a frantic way.

Choosing a scent became less about “locking in my identity” and more about paying attention.

What do I reach for naturally? What makes me stand a little straighter? What feels like me — just slightly refined?

That’s the one.

Not because it completes me.

But because it feels like direction.

Permission to Choose Softly

If you’re in an in-between phase too — welcome.

You don’t have to know exactly who you are to choose something that feels right.

You don’t have to wait until you’re fully formed.

You can choose based on who you’re becoming.

You can experiment.

You can change your mind.

You can let your signature evolve as you do.

There’s no perfume police coming to check if you picked correctly.

It’s not a contract.

It’s a practice.

Maybe a signature scent isn’t about declaring who you are forever.

Maybe it’s just choosing who you’re practicing right now.

And practicing her doesn’t require a 5am routine.

Just intention.

After snooze. 🌸
